[edit] Quick start guide

[edit] What is the Bye Bye Standby® Energy Manager?

The Bye Bye Standby® Energy Manager (EM) is an intranet web service to control and manage idle time of PCs in offices and office peripherals. The Administrator of this system is enabled to set up the Energy Manager to optimize power usage in offices.

[edit] What is the Intranet?

The Intranet is a private computer network that uses Intranet protocols and network connectivity to securely share a part of an organization’s information with its employees.

[edit] How does it work?

The Energy Manager handles usage energy by hibernating PCs’ operating systems and cutting off the power from the hosts. To perform a hibernation, the PC Energy Manager communicates with Bye Bye Standby® screen savers which should already have been installed on the PCs. When PCs are idle and the option ‘End of working’ is selected on the software, PCs are wasting energy. Peripherals can also be set to go on and off at set times of the day.

[edit] Bye Bye Standby® Intranet Server

The Bye Bye Standby® Intranet Server manages registered Bye Bye Standby® screen savers in local networks and also contains a webpage entitled ‘Energy Manager’ where the System Administrator is able to control PCs.

[edit] The administrator can watch

  • Power being consumed now (active device)
  • Power being used now (standby device)
  • Energy used
  • Carbon produced
  • Money spent
  • Energy used (standby devices)
  • Energy used (active devices)
  • Energy used at last recording
  • Time since last calculation
  • Energy used since last calculations

[edit] The administrator can manage

  • System Shutdown/Reboot- to disable or restart the system
  • Shutdown - to shutdown all computers & equipment in the organization
  • Wake up - to send the "Wake up" command to computers and equipment
  • Site preferences - to configure the system parameters
  • Functions - to maintain and optimise the database
  • Controller Functions - to enable controllers and allocate MAC addresses Database

[edit] Reports

Energy - shows how much energy is being consumed or saved. Carbon – as for ‘Energy’ but in regards to the amount of CO2 produced. Financial - shows the amount of money your systems are costing and how much money Bye Bye Standby® is saving you. Logs - shows the details of how the system is performing.

[edit] Users

Each PC in your office needs a Bye Bye Standby® Screensaver which enables PCs to be linked to Bye Bye Standby® Intranet Server.

[edit] Registering Users

When registering Bye Bye Standby® on a PC, the Bye Bye Standby® Intranet Server will start the PC monitoring and users activity. The administrator of the Bye Bye Standby® Server must set the ‘Start of Work’ and ‘End of Work’ times on each PC, switch on and switch off schedules. The Bye Bye Standby® Screensaver will hibernate the operating system.
