Q: What is Bye Bye Standby® Office Energy Saving Kit?
A: The Bye Bye Standby® Office Energy Saving Kit is a brand new energy saving solution designed to reduce daily energy consumption of electrical devices. BBSB Office Energy Saving Kit works by completely cutting power to devices when not in use, thus saving power that devices would otherwise have consumed in Standby Mode. BBSB Office Energy Saving Kit is a new way to reduce carbon emissions, save energy and money at work exclusively designed with a secure and tamper proof socket.
Q: How does BBSB work?
A: BBSB is a device that connects between the wall socket and any appliance which consumes energy unnecessarily. This could be an appliance with a Standby® mode, such as a Monitor, or an appliance which is always on when it could be off, such as a printer or mobile phone charger. The BBSB secure socket allows the user to have easy control over all these appliances. When they no longer need to use these appliances, such as evenings or weekends, a single button can be pressed which physically disconnects the wasteful appliance so it no longer consumes energy. Pressing the button again reconnects all the appliances.
Q: What is Standby® power?
A: Standby power is power being consumed while the appliance is not being fully utilized, but while it awaits instruction; while it is “standing by”. In many cases, Standby® power serves no useful function.
Q: I have seen your product Bye Bye Standby® at a High Street Retailer shop. Is this the same item?
A: ByeBye Standby®, the high street product, is designed for home environments whereas the Bye Bye Standby® Office Energy Saving Kit is designed for workplace environments. There are various kits available depending on the size of your work place.
Q: What is the difference between Bye Bye Standby® (BBSB) and Bye Bye Standby® Office Energy Saving Kit?
BBSB is designed for home environments whereas the BBSB Office Energy Saving Kit is designed for workplace environments. The secure and tamper proof sockets included in the BBSB Office Energy Saving Kit will ensure that while BBSB is on, you can visually check that all sockets are on by viewing the red light on each socket. Each remote control included in Office Packs has a unique ID code. The sockets paired with one remote will only respond to their remote’ specific ID Code, therefore no other remote will be communicating with these sockets.
Q: How much energy does the average work place waste by leaving appliances on Standby®?
A: According to the Carbon Trust, the average office in the UK spends £6,000 per year on out-of-office energy wastage. These figures may include lighting, air-conditioning, hard-wired equipment, etc in addition to plug loads.

Q: What benefits can be gained by using BBSB Office Energy Kit?
• Saves energy: Completely cuts power to your Monitor, Computer, Coffee Vending Machine, Mobile Phone Charger etc at the simple touch of a button.
• Saves you money: Reduces your electricity bill by switching off devices left on Standby® within your workplace.
• Saves the environment: Reduces carbon emissions into the atmosphere by shutting down equipment not in use.
• Prevents fire: Gives peace of mind that all appliances are off.
• Makes life easier: Gives you convenience – allows you to remotely control appliances at the touch of a button.
Q: Is it true that leaving electrical appliances such as Monitors, TVs etc on Standby® uses very little energy and means the warm up time is reduced?
A: No. In general appliances such as TVs use more electricity in Standby® mode than owners realise. TV Standbys generally use 3-7W compared with around 140W when switched on, however when applied to the whole of the UK, Standby energy consumption represents 15% of total TV energy use.*
Q: Do you have any figures relating to savings that can be made by turning off a computer rather than leaving it on Standby®?
A: According to the Carbon Trust, a typical PC (including monitor) left on for 24 hours each day can use £45 or more of energy per year. Turned off at night and weekends and by adopting energy management techniques, the same units will only use around £10 of energy per year.
Q: Are there any energy savings to be gained from switching off appliances rather than leaving them on Standby®?
A: Yes, in Standby mode some appliances still use as much as 25 per cent of the energy they do when they are switched on. Over the course of a year, the energy wasted by some appliances in Standby® mode can exceed the energy they use when on. Switching all appliances in your office off when not in use can save you £ 32 a year per employee* and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Q: Which appliances are the main Standby® offenders?
• Lighting can account for up to 40% of your company’s total electricity bill. Reducing your lighting bill will save you money and help lower your carbon emissions.
• Two-thirds of the energy consumed by office equipment is attributed to computers (PCs and monitors) Switching them off at evenings and weekends would save you energy and money!
• Experts say the total power used while an appliance is on Standby® can equal the electricity used during the time it is on.
• Other appliances with high Standby power use are cordless telephones
Q: What is the lifespan of a BBSB remote control and how frequently do I need to change the battery?
A: The BBSB remote is a robust controller. Each press takes 2 seconds and in total it can be pressed 60000~70000 times in 12volts.
Q: How much Standby power do typical appliances within the Office consume?
|
On Standby Not Using BBSB |
Monitor |
2.80w |
Computer |
4.10w |
Printer |
10.40w |
Q: There is a little light on the socket when the appliances are fully switched off, does this energy consumption not eradicate any benefit of using BBSB Office Energy Saving Kit?
A: The light is on the socket – to show that the socket is switched on and to also show that there is a live 240V current running through the adaptor when it is switched on at the wall. The energy consumption of the smart sockets when measured is negligible – it does not read either an amp or watt value when tested with an energy meter – this fact is confirmed by our independent test. When you bear in mind you can use this socket with a 6 way extension lead, this tiny amount pales into insignificance as you could potentially cut the Standby power of 6 appliances using one socket. Bearing in mind 71% of the population leave appliances in Standby mode anyway*, BBSB Office Energy Kit is likely to have a positive effect in reducing carbon emissions.
Q: What’s the difference between BBSB Office Energy Saving Kit and just switching appliances off at the mains?
A: There is no difference however evidence from a number of official sources proves that people do not switch off their appliances of at the mains. This may be because they forget or cannot be bothered to go round and switch everything when leaving the office. BBSB Office Energy Saving Kit provides a convenient solution which enables people to switch off a number of devices at the touch of a button which is easily accessible. The BBSB Office is also helpful for those who are unable to bend down and reach the actual socket.
Q: Is it dangerous to have a 4-way plug adapter connected to a BBSB Office socket?
A: Because the BBSB Office Energy Kit fully cuts power to devices, it actually reduces the risk of fire present by leaving appliances in Standby mode. BBSB can be plugged into a 4-way socket, or plugged into a wall. This poses no further risk than the 4-way socket in its common everyday usage.
Q: How does this device work with audio/ video products that lose their settings if turned off for a while?
A: Most equipment that has a memory for holding settings has a rechargeable battery to enable it to hold the settings during a power cut. As long as these devices are on long enough to recharge the battery then it is fine to turn them off.
Having said this, if you want to use the device to record programs, then it will need to have power to be able to do this. In which case, it would be worth not connecting the device to BBSB Office. This will then enable the device to record regardless of the state of the BBSB Office Energy Kit whilst still enabling you to save energy on the rest of the equipment.
Q: How can you prove it saves the average office-based employee £32 per year off their electricity bill?
Independent Research by a leading university has estimated the potential savings that can be gained by using the ‘Bye-Bye Standby® Office’ devices. Three different sizes of offices were analysed, from a 10 to 100 person office. Standby power consumption of the appliances was gathered both from the literature and from measurements. This then enabled a calculation of the potential energy savings. For a 10 person office using BBSB Office devices, an annual saving of around £375 was identified. For a 50 person office using BBSB Office devices, an annual saving of around £1,500 was identified. For a 100 person office using BBSB Office devices, an annual saving of around £3,000 was identified. If there was a complete penetration into the UK Offices, then an annual saving of over £300,000,000 and a CO2 reduction of 1,000,000,000 kg could be made.
